FROM THE BEACH TO THE BAR
Why Bertie?
We get asked this a lot. Why name a shorts brand after some guy? The short answer is that Bertie isn't really some guy, he's a filter. Every decision we make — the fabric, the h...
Three mates. One question.
Why are board shorts still so average?
We'd been wearing the same brands since we were teenagers. The fit hadn't changed. The fabric hadn't improved. The hardware was still plastic. Somewhere along the way, the brands we grew up loving just stopped giving a shit.
So we started Berties.
Two years obsessing over every detail. The weight of the fabric, the curve of the buckle, the way the waistband sits when you're three beers deep at a Sunday session. Nine rounds of samples. Threw out more than we kept. Argued about pocket depth. Lost sleep over stitching.
The result is a board short that works from the beach to the bar. No mesh liner. No clinging when wet. No changing before you head out. Put them on in the morning and forget about them until you take them off at night.
We're Will, Ben, and Jono. Based in Melbourne, building this from scratch. Will handles operations and the factory. Ben designs every print and pattern. Jono runs content and makes sure you actually hear about us.
We're not trying to be the next big surf brand. We're trying to make the best board shorts in the world. That's it.
Everyone knows a Bertie.
He's 28. Architect. Lives somewhere on the Northern Rivers. The kind of guy who walks into a room and the room just reorganises around him. Not loud, not performing. Just present.
He dresses well without looking like he's trying. Throws the kind of parties people talk about for weeks. Knows the right song for the right moment. His mates come from everywhere. They don't all know each other, but they all know Bertie.
Bertie is our filter. Every decision we make runs through one question: would Bertie wear this? Would Bertie be here? Would Bertie approve?
If the answer's no, it's wrong.
Craft over shortcuts. If it's worth making, it's worth making properly. We'd rather get one product right than rush ten to market.
Beach to bar. Your shorts should work as hard as you do. Morning surf, afternoon beers, dinner with mates. One pair, no compromises.
No try-hards. We don't do flashy logos, influencer gimmicks, or manufactured hype. We make good stuff and let it speak.
